Harbor Lights Triathlon

I competed in the Harbor Lights Tri in Waukegan, IL this morning. The race was absolutely outstanding! I think that it is the largest tri that I have done to date. There were probably about 1000 athletes competing. The distances for the race are listed below:

Swim: 800 yards
Bike: 13.2 miles
Run: 4 miles

The water temperature was noted at 72 degrees earlier this week. I expected a warm water swim. I showed up to find out that the current water temp was 62 degrees! The swim went very well. We were sent off in waves of 75 people and had plenty of room to swim comfortably. The waves were three minutes apart, so I was even able to catch a couple folks in the wave ahead of me! The TA was a ways from the water, so T1 time will be a little long.

My bike was strong as well. It was basically an access road ride and then two four mile loops on a closed stretch of newly paved highway. I was able to keep my cadence high and keep my speed well above 20 mph. I am anxious to see my average speed.

Off the bike into the run. The transition went well and I cruised through mile 1 in about 7:30 pace. I slowed a bit in the second mile, but found my legs and pushed hard to bring it home. I'm hoping that my run came in under 30 minutes.

Overall, a really great race. I enjoyed myself and just kept repeating today's mantra: "Stay strong, stay within yourself."
